Overcoming barriers to educating young people about sex and HIV

The UNAIDS Secretariat, UNESCO, UNFPA and IPPF co-organised this lunch meeting as a side event during the UN High Level Meeting in June 2008.

The event discussed how HIV prevention efforts could be improved by more explicitly dealing with the sexual transmission of the virus and by communicating this with young people.

The event was chaired by Salman Ahmad, UNAIDS Special Representative on HIV and AIDS and rock musician. The speakers were:


  • Dr. Jose Angel Cordova-Villalobos, Minister of Health, Mexico


  • Michel Sidibe, Deputy Executive Director of UNAIDS


  • Ms. Sonyiyoko Hoilett, Young person's peer educator, Jamaica
