UNESCO and Japanese Funds-In-Trust collaboration on building capacity of education sector responses to HIV and AIDS
The Japanese government has provided US$1 million for the projects to strengthen comprehensive education sector responses to HIV and AIDS in five countries: Burundi, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland and Jamaica.
Burundi
The EDUCAIDS project in Burundi funded by the Japanese government aims at improving the knowledge and skills of young people to enable them to protect themselves against HIV infection. The project supports youth centres through training of trainers and peer educators in life skills and communication. Underscoring the “Three Ones” principles, the project is coordinated by the Conseil National de Lutte contre le VIH/SIDA. UNESCO is building a strong partnership with local authorities, local youth associations as well as UNAIDS cosponsors such as UNICEF and UNFPA.
Lesotho
The project Capacity building of the Lesotho education sector for a scaled-up response to the HIV and AIDS challenges was developed as a result of productive consultation with partners guided by the “Three Ones” principals in Lesotho. The project organizes trainings for various stakeholders in the education sector such as teachers, teacher trainers, policy makers and local counselors. Main activities include an advocacy campaign to promote a rights-based approach to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support as well as education for all young people.
Mozambique
Based on Education Sector Strategic Plan II, in particular the strategies on HIV and AIDS and teacher training, the project Building capacity for HIV and AIDS responses in teachers education institutions aims to reduce vulnerability of students to HIV through the implementation of HIV and AIDS education at teachers training institutions in Mozambique.
Swaziland
The project Strengthening the capacity of the education sector of Swaziland to scale up its response to the HIV and AIDS challenges within the framework of EDUCAIDS aims to build the capacity of managers and educators as well as strengthening the partnership among stakeholders in the education sector. Through the project, a series of workshops, trainings and meetings as well as media campaigns are being carried out.
Jamaica
Building on previous UNESCO support to Jamaica’s Ministry of Education in the area of HIV and AIDS education, the EDUCAIDS project in Jamaica Strengthen capacity of the education ministry to effectively respond to the HIV and AIDS epidemic focuses on strategic planning; professional development and the design and production of instructional resources. The project addresses the need to further build the capacity of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture to fully mobilize the response of the sector to the epidemic to contribute to the achievement of the MDGs through containment of the HIV epidemic and reduction of stigma and discrimination in respect of those infected and affected by HIV.
The projects were funded by the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the Capacity Building of Human Resources, which aims to contribute to the capacity building of human resources in developing countries as a part of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) of the Government of Japan.
