Denmark joined UNESCO on November 4, 1946.

The 2003 “Nordic Memorandum of Understanding” between UNESCO and Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden provides for a new funding approach towards Education for All. It is entitled “Capacity-Building for Education for All – Extra-budgetary Programme for Technical Services to Countries implementing the Dakar Framework of Action”.

Denmark and UNESCO’s dynamic cooperation covers many fields. In 2004, the Danish International Development Assistance (DANIDA) Agency led a UNESCO-DANIDA human rights programme in Burkina Faso aimed at “providing skills for community participation to rural women”. Denmark also actively participates in the International Programme for the Development of Communications (IPDC), promoting free and pluralistic media.

Denmark has one natural and three cultural sites on the World Heritage List.

The country holds two UNESCO Chairs: in Communications, created in 1999 at the Copenhagen Business School, and in Problem-Based Learning in Engineering Education, since 2007 at Aalborg University.
