The Republic of Serbia continues the UNESCO membership of the State Union Serbia and Montenegro (following the Declaration of Independence adopted by the National Assembly of Montenegro on 3 June 2006). The former Serbia and Montenegro had joined UNESCO on December 20, 2000, and the former Yugoslavia in 1950.

In May 2004, the former Serbia and Montenegro hosted World Press Freedom Day. Over 200 journalists from all over the world gathered in Belgrade for the event. Cooperation between the country and UNESCO in the field of information and communication led to the opening, in September 2003, of a new printing plant for the country’s independent press.

In 2004, a UNESCO Chair in Studies of Interculturalism, Art and Cultural Management and Mediation in the Balkans was created at the University of Arts in Belgrade.

On May 12, 2005, UNESCO organized a donors’ conference on the protection of cultural heritage, including numerous historical monuments of Orthodox Serbian architecture, such as the Deĉani Monastery in Kosovo. Inscribed in 2004, it was added to the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2006. In 2006 the site was extended and the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo now also include the Patriarchate of Peć Monastery, Gračanica Monastery and the Church of the Virgin of Ljeviška. In 2007, Gamzigrad-Romuliana, Palace of Galerius, was added to the World Heritage List.
