Eritrea joined UNESCO on 2 September 1993. It is covered by the UNESCO Office in Nairobi, Kenya.

The country benefited from the Programme for Education for Emergencies and Reconstruction (PEER) from 2003 to 2005. Eritrea is now implementing the UNESCO Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), aimed at achieving the United Nations Literacy Decade goals. The project “Training on Interactive Pedagogy for Eritrean Teachers” is also ongoing.

Eritrea is in the process of identifying and cataloguing its natural and cultural heritage. The Historic Perimeter of Asmara represents perhaps the world’s most complete ensemble of Modernist architecture. It is included on the World Heritage Tentative List.

Located on the east coast of Africa and comprising 300 islands, Eritrea is a Member of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
