Zimbabwe joined UNESCO on 22 September 1980. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Harare.

Zimbabwe is represented on the World Heritage List by two natural and three cultural sites. The country’s Mbende Jerusarema Dance was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.

Other areas of cooperation with UNESCO include development of “tourism of memory” linked to the slave trade; the coupons programme particularly for procuring educational materials; and EDUCAIDS for HIV/Aids prevention.

The country has three UNESCO Chairs at the University of Zimbabwe, in human rights, distance education and renewable energies.
