Saudi Arabia joined UNESCO on November 4, 1946. It is covered by the UNESCO Office Doha (Qatar), cluster office for Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

In 2005, Saudi Arabia was elected to the Intergovernmental Council of UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) to represent this sub-region. The Programme provides support for media projects and seeks to promote a healthy environment for the growth of free and pluralistic media in developing countries.

According to Education for All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report 2006, Saudi Arabia has a high chance of achieving the goal of adult literacy in 2015.

Since 2002, the country has a document, the world’s most ancient Islamic (Kufic) inscription, listed in the Memory of the World International Register. The inscription is located south of Qa'a al Muatadil in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
