History

Founded 1950, Rome (Italy), as International Caritas Conference (ICC), to respond to the need for a high-level global umbrella organization for the various national Catholic humanitarian assistance, social service and development organizations worldwide, many of which use the name Caritas. Incorporated the already existing 'Caritas Internationalis' based in Lucerne (Switzerland). Statutes were approved and adopted on an ad experimentum basis in Sep 1950. Constitutional Assembly took place 12-14 Dec 1951, Rome, and was attended by delegates from national organizations in 13 countries. Current name adopted 4 Nov 1954. Acronym CI in official use since Feb 1957. Full title: Caritas Internationalis - International Confederation of Catholic Organizations for Charitable and Social Action - Confédération internationale d'organismes catholiques d'action charitable et sociale - Confederación Internacional de Organizaciones Católicas de Acción Caritativa y Social.

Aims

Stimulate and aid national Caritas organizations to facilitate assistance, advancement and integral development of the most underprivileged, by means of active charity in keeping with the teaching and tradition of the Catholic Church.
