On 25 November, the United Nations celebrates the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The date was chosen to commemorate the death of Mirabal sisters, young political activists against the dictatorship in Dominican Republic in 1960.

This year, the Gender Regional Group for West and Central Africa of the United Nations organizes the « 16 Days of Activism against Violence against Women » around the theme « From Peace in the House to Peace in the World : an Education for All ».

In collaboration with WADR, West Africa Democracy Radio, the Group will produce 16 radio shows and will share their work on the theme of gender-based violence. The participating agencies will describe, through the voice of experts of the United Nations and beneficiaries of the United Nations programs in Senegal and in West Africa, their actions in the field for a “Africa zero violence against young girls and women”.

The themes will tackle sexual violence perpetrated in all impunity towards schoolchildren and young boys and girls, to the vulnerability of young girls deprived of access to education in refugee camps and of displaced persons, to the protection and the safety of journalists, mainly of women in the field, to the essential role of women in peace negotiations, the establishment of peace, of diplomacy and of decision-making, among others.

The participating agencies are OCHA, UNICEF, UNODC, OIM, UNESCO, FAO, UNFPA, WFP, UNHCR, UNDG, UN Women, HCDH, and ONUSIDA. This activity is coordinated by UNESCO.

Every day, from 25 November until 10 December, Human Rights day, WADR will broadcast a debate to learn about the work and the impact of the United Nations on the populations in West Africa.

To follow the debates, UNESCO Dakar and the website of the joint platform of the United Nations agencies in Senegal, will daily re-play the podcasts from WADR and they will share them here.
