Two Albanian sites are inscribed on the World Heritage List.

The Butrint site, which had been on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 1997, was removed from this list in 2005 when measures were taken to protect it. UNESCO made recommendations for conservation and management of the site. The Organization also carried out an extensive study of Albania’s cultural heritage, identifying priorities and making recommendations for the protection and presentation of very many sites covering a wide variety of periods and styles. UNESCO is also playing a part in the creation of a school of restoration.

Albania has also presented a candidature file for the 2005 Proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Mankind.

Albania is taking part in a regional project to conserve the regional heritage and develop it in terms of cultural diversity aiming at community reconciliation.

With respect to cultural policies and intercultural dialogue, the country is participating in an initiative, with UNESCO support, to increase social and cultural cooperation between the countries of south-eastern Europe.
