Trinidad and Tobago ratified the World Heritage Convention in 2005 and is concerned about increasing awareness among the population, and particularly youth, of the importance of tangible and intangible heritage.
The country is deeply committed to the Slave Route in the Caribbean project and its implications for cultural tourism. It organized noteworthy events during the International Year for the Commemoration of the Struggle Against Slavery and its Abolition and conducted awareness-raising operations among youth in collaboration with the Associated Schools Network.
A number of historians from Trinidad and Tobago participated in the drafting of the General History of the Caribbean.
Trinidad and Tobago also cooperates with UNESCO on the cultural approach to the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS. This Caribbean island plays an active role in the various activities organized by UNESCO's Kingston Office.
