Togo, which already has a cultural site inscribed on the World Heritage List, has presented a Tentative List of several natural and cultural sites.

In the field of intangible heritage, the country - in liaison with Benin and Nigeria - was instrumental in having the Oral Heritage of Gelede proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001. An action plan has been launched for the revitalization and protection of this oral expression.

In order to enhance the spiritual dimension of the cultural heritage of the inhabitants of several West African countries, a UNESCO Chair related to the influence of African thought and the preservation of African cultural heritage was created at the University of Lomé.

Togo has participated in the implementation of the Tourism of Memory programme in the framework of the Slave Route Project, and it cooperates with UNESCO in staff training.
