Three cultural sites and four natural sites in the United Republic of Tanzania appear on the World Heritage List.

One of these sites, the Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and Ruins of Songo Mnara, is linked to slavery. As this site has been inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger, Tanzania has received support from UNESCO for the elaboration of an appropriate conservation plan.

In the framework of the Slave Route Project, Tanzania has participated in the implementation of the programme for tourism of memory.

Tanzania's experience in the management of heritage linked to independence struggles serves as a model for the Slave Route Project that is devoted to the conservation of heritage linked to African liberation.
