Heritage management remains one of the principal areas of cooperation between Australia and UNESCO.

Australia has two cultural site, eleven natural and four mixed sites on the World Heritage List. One of its natural sites, the Great Barrier Reef, is threatened by the adverse effects of climate change. In association with the World Heritage Centre, Australia and the European Union have developed an exchange programme for students in the field of heritage management. Entitled, "Share Our Heritages", this programme enables participating students to explore other concepts of heritage and conservation through an intercultural perspective.

Other areas of cooperation between Australia and UNESCO include intercultural and interreligious dialogue; a University Chair devoted to relations between cultures and faiths was established at Monash University in Clayton in 2005.
