UNESCO and the Maldives work together in the framework of the Action Programme for the Sustainable Development of Small Developing Island States.

As a State Party to the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, Maldives has been encouraged to place its marine areas on the Tentative List for eventual inscription on the World Heritage List.
