France and UNESCO cooperate in many different aspects of the field of culture.

The thirty-one sites on the World Heritage List, including one French-Spanish cross-border site, reflect the great diversity of France's heritage. In 1997, France signed a cooperation agreement with UNESCO with a view to protecting and enhancing the monumental, urban and natural heritage. Thanks to this technical and financial agreement, the Organization will receive the support of French institutions and expertise.

In the field of intangible heritage, France has set up a system of Living Human Treasures. Moreover, the Processional Giants and Dragons in Belgium and France joined the ranks of the Masterpieces of the Oral Heritage and the Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.

Regarding cultural policies and intercultural dialogue, this country actively participates in UNESCO's programmes related to intercultural dialogue, and in particular the Slave Route Project. France also contributed to the preparation of the History of the Civilizations of Central Asia and the History of Humanity publication series. It also played a key role in the preliminary work for the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

France was one of the contributors to UNESCO's programme for the safeguarding of the heritage of Afghanistan and supported similar projects for Bosnia, Cambodia and Iraq.

As regards the arts and cultural industries, France is a member of UNESCO's Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity and is particularly interested in the status of cultural goods and services and support for handicrafts.
