In the field of culture, the Cook Islands and UNESCO work together in the framework of the Action Programme for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, which is part of the Mauritius Strategy.

The Cook Islands also participate in the activities of the Pacific 2009 Programme, which encourages all countries in the region to ratify the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and fosters sub-regional cooperation for the implementation of that instrument.
