Tonga and UNESCO cooperate in the framework of the action programme for Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States.
As a State Party to the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage since 2004, Tonga receives support from UNESCO for its implementation through the Pacific 2009 Programme.
In the field of living heritage, the year 2003 was noteworthy for the designation of the Lakalaka, Dances and Sung Speeches from Tonga as a Masterpiece of the Oral and intangible Heritage of Humanity. A safeguarding plan designed to ensure the preservation of this expression and its transmission to younger generations has been elaborated.
