IZUM-Regional Centre for Library Information Systems and Current Research Information Systems, Maribor, Slovenia

Formerly the Institute of Information Science, the Centre will coordinate the development and application of standards for computer support to meet the requirements of the shared bibliographic system for National Libraries of the countries participating in COBISS.Net.

The 187th session of the Executive Board approved IZUM-Regional Centre for Library Information Systems and Current Research Information Systems as a Category 2 Centre. The agreement governing its establishment was signed on the 18th September, and the Center was officially inaugurated on the 24th October 2012. The Center will specifically work towards complementing UNESCO’s activities in the following areas:

  • Access to information and knowledge;
  • Cultural diversity and identity, linguistic diversity and local content and
  • Ethical dimensions of the Information Society.

For this purpose, the Centre will facilitate the development of libraries and information systems for the free flow of ideas, and to maintain, increase and spread knowledge in line with the Information for All Programme (IFAP).

The Centre will also promote digital preservation, Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Access (OA) to scientific information and research. The centre will work towards institutional capacity building and national policy development, to strengthen Open Access to scholarly information and knowledge in Member States.
