THE ORGANIZATION

UNESCO 018B.jpg Today, there are 2, 189 such structures, which have no equivalent within the United Nations system. The National Commissions are made up of intellectuals, academics and scientists and help to evolve, implement and evaluate UNESCO programmes. They send out information about the Organization by preparing publications and documents, holding exhibitions or organizing lectures. They also play an advisory role to their respective governments and pass on the ideas of the Organization.
The National Commissions form an essential link between the world of research and UNESCO. They entertain close relations with the Secretariat, both at Headquarters and at the Field Offices away from Headquarters. UNESCO regularly arranges meetings for those in charge, at the regional orinterregional level, so as to be better informed about needs in the field.
