The Institutes and Centres under the Auspices of UNESCO (Category 2) are not legally part of the Organization, but are associated with it through formal arrangements approved by the General Conference.They contribute to the achievement of UNESCO’s strategic programme objectives and sectoral or intersectoral programme priorities and themes.

    During the 35th session of UNESCO’s General Conference, held from 6-23 October 2009, UNESCO’s Member States adopted a new integrated comprehensive strategy for category 2 institutes and centres in 35 C/Resolution 103.

    This integrated comprehensive strategy, as well as the guidelines concerning the creation of institutes and centres under the auspices of UNESCO (category 2,) and a model agreement between UNESCO and a Member State concerned, are contained in 35 C/22.

    As requested in the integrated comprehensive strategy for category 2 institutes and centres (35 C/22), BSP undertook a biennial mapping, in coordination will all category 2 focal points, of all category 2 institutes and centres that have been approved by the General Conference to date. The results of this mapping are contained in document 189 EX/INF.5, while the specific details concerning each institute and centre can be found in this document.
