Community Media
UNESCO promotes community media in order to enhance media pluralism and the inclusion of marginalized communities in policy- and decision-making processes related to sustainable development.
Communication for sustainable development
UNESCO assists developing countries in strengthening their communication capacities by developing independent and pluralistic media and improving media access to ICT, in particular through the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).
Freedom of Expression
UNESCO promotes freedom of expression and freedom of the press as a basic human right, through sensitization and monitoring activities. It also fosters media independence and pluralism as prerequisites and major factors of democratization by providing advisory services on media legislation and sensitizing governments, parliamentarians and other decision-makers.
Journalism education and training
UNESCO recognizes the fact that sound journalism education contributes towards professional and ethical practice of journalism. Such journalism is better suited to foster democracy, dialogue and development.
Open Educational Resources
UNESCO believes that universal access to high quality education is key to the building of peace, sustainable social and economic development, and intercultural dialogue. Open Educational Resources (OER) provide a strategic opportunity to improve the quality of education as well as facilitate policy dialogue, knowledge sharing and capacity building.
Preservation of documentary heritage
Documentary heritage reflects the diversity of languages, peoples and cultures. It is the mirror of the world and its memory. But this memory is fragile. Every day, irreplaceable parts of this memory disappear for ever.
World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)
WSIS provided a forum in which multiple stakeholders including international organizations, governments, the private sector and civil society could discuss the opportunities of the new information and communication environment, and address challenges such as the ‘digital divide’. The Summit output in a set of outcome documents and resulted in the creation of Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and UN Group on the Information Society (UNGIS).
World Press Freedom Day
Every year, May 3rd is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
