UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA) organizes a validation workshop to support secondary education teacher educators in delivering education for sustainable development (ESD)

UNESCO ROSA is launching the next phase of its Global Action Plan on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) with a regional workshop of teacher educators and ministerial representatives in Johannesburg between 26 and 28 January 2017. The workshop forms part of the Sustainability Starts With Teachers project which UNESCO ROSA is implementing in partnership with the Southern African Regional Universities Association (SARUA), Rhodes University and SWEDESD. The project will deliver a training course for secondary education teacher educators in how to implement ESD in teacher education.

The workshop will reflect on current ESD practices and programmes in southern Africa and delegates will be asked to provide input into a draft framework for the secondary education teacher educator’s training programme. The workshop will be attended by over 40 delegates representing ministries and Teacher Education Institutions (TEIS) from ten countries: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Over three days, the workshop will reflect on such issues as how ESD links with quality education and delegates will have the opportunity to review and discuss what programmes have so far been conducted in the region, what their achievements were and how the Sustainability Starts With Teachers project can make an impact.

Some of the questions delegates will discuss in light of a proposed training framework in ESD for teacher educators responsible for training teachers for secondary school education will be:
•    Why is ESD needed in Teacher Education?
•    What learning outcomes should ESD in secondary Teacher Education         deliver?
•    How can secondary school teachers enhance their curriculum and               teaching practice?
•    How can secondary school teachers be equipped to implement                      transformative learning?
•    What policy outreach, networking and community engaged                           approaches can expand the reach of the project?
Based on these discussions, the draft teaching framework will be revised and updated for delivery in 2017 at three regional workshops for southern African secondary education teacher educators.
