Department of Technical and Vocational Education (DTVE) functions mainly two implementation programmes; such as ´Developing Human Resource´ and ´Research and Development´.

In order to develop the Human Resource sector, DTVE is (1) extending and upgrading Technological Universities and Colleges, Universities of Computer Studies, Government Computer Colleges and Government Technical Institutes; (2) offering special courses and new specializations; (3) providing advanced teaching aids and laboratory equipment; (4) providing up-to-date reference materials, (5) providing up-to-date machines and other facilities to be used in practical workshops which help to apply with theoretical knowledge.

In order to improve Research and Development sector, DTVE is carrying out (4) main research works; such as (a) Research works on Rural Development; (b) Research works on Industrial Development, (c) Researches for Master´s and Doctoral programmes; (d) Regular research works being done by Research Departments.

Moreover, Ministry of Science and Technology has already established (30) Technological Universities, (25) Computer Universities, (4) Government Technical Colleges, (7) Government Technical Institutes and (13) Technical Training Schools all over the country. More than 180,000 graduates have been nurtured in the fields of engineering, computer studies and information technology.
