The ASKAIDS Project involved a research project in Sub-Saharan Africa, focused on understanding how primary age pupils acquire sexual knowledge, in what contexts and how this relates to the HIV education received in schools (phase 1). The second phase produced a set of curriculum development materials in dialogue with local stakeholders.
While we have learned a good deal about effective sexuality and HIV education, we can do much better. Several areas of research suggest that it is time to develop and test a "social studies" approach to sex and HIV education - one that starts earlier and fosters critical thinking skills, gender equality, and human rights. Such an effort may have important lessons for improved sexual and reproductive health outcomes and contribute to other aspects of young people's preparation for active, informed participation in civil society.

While many initiatives have sought to empower women in addressing gender-based inequality, the needs of young men appear often to have been neglected. This manual applies a gender perspective in working with young men. It incorporates two major perspectives: gender specificity and gender equity. This manual is based on the findings of a systematic review published by Family Health International (FHI) on the Impact of Sex and HIV Education Programs on Sexual Behaviours of Youth in Developing Countries (Kirby et al., 2005) and deliberations from an expert consultation meeting convened by FHI in January 2006. One of the results of the research was a list of 24 characteristics of effective curriculum-based programmes.
