Morocco joined UNESCO on November 7, 1956. Opened in 1991, the UNESCO Office Rabat is a cluster office representing Algeria, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.

Education is a major area of cooperation between UNESCO and Morocco. The country is also actively participating in gender equality activities. There are 13 UNESCO Chairs in the country, four of them focused on human rights.

The UNESCO/ISESCO Arab Research-Policy Network on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ARADESC) was established in Rabat in 2006.

Morocco is home to eight World Heritage sites, and two Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In 2006, Morocco hosted the UNESCO Rabat
Conference on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.
