Rwanda joined UNESCO on 7 November 1962. The country is covered by the Organization's office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Rwanda has volunteered to participate in the “One UN” pilot initiative. It is designed to better coordinate delivery by United Nations agencies, including UNESCO.

One of the country’s top priorities is strengthening its educational capacities. It is also concerned with developing media. The UNESCO-sponsored Radio Salus at the National University of Rwanda provides training for students. In 2007, it also launched an initiative focusing on the community of coffee growers.

Rwanda is involved in several environmental conservation initiatives, including the Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP).
