UNESCO Dakar hosts the Regional Training of Trainers in West and Central Africa on Mainstreaming Gender in the UNDAFS in Support of the Sustainable Development Goals

28/11 - 02/12 2016, Dakar, Senegal - On the occasion of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day, the WCA Regional Gender Thematic Group, of which UNESCO Dakar is a part (and also comprising UN Women, UNFPA, OIM, WFP, OCHA, UNHCR, OHCHR,UNODC, FAO, UNDG and UNICEF Regional Offices) organizes a training of trainers on Mainstreaming Gender in UN Common Country Programming in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals, in Dakar, from 28 November to 2 December 2016 at UNESCO multisectoral and regional office.
The concept of gender mainstreaming was identified as a universal strategy to promote gender equality in the Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. This concept highlighted the need to ensure that gender equality was a priority in all areas of social and economic development.
In 2012 the QCPR resolution (A/RES/67/226) called the UN Development System to draw upon available expertise within the UN system to support gender mainstreaming in program planning and implementation and to ensure that the principles of gender equality are systematically integrated in all stages of elaboration of UNDAF and other development frameworks.
In addition, there are growing demands on the UN to better support national governments and other partners to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the standalone goal on gender, and gender specific targets across other SDGs. This underlines the need to ensure that UNTCs are better equipped to support the localization of the SDGs in a gender-responsive manner. The West and Central Africa region (WCA) has 13 countries UNDAF roll-out this year. Consequently, there is a need to boost UNDAF expertise, particularly with respect to gender mainstreaming. It is envisaged that the Gender Thematic Group (GTG) will play an important part in the roll-out.
In this context, The WCA Regional Gender Thematic Group in partnership with UN Women Training Center organizes a regional Training of Trainers (ToT) to bring together experts from the UN system in the WCA region in order to train them on how to better integrate gender perspectives into UN Country level programming and in SDG localization process. This first ToT will focus on Francophone countries, in the region and will be followed by another in Anglophone countries in 2017.
