2009 International Essay Contest for Young People - Winners Announced! The Goi Peace Foundation in association with UNESCO, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, and other eminent partners organize every year the Essay Contest for Young People. This is an important opportunity for young people from all over the world to express themselves by writing an essay on current issues such as culture of peace, media and communication or sustainable development.

For the 10th edition the winners were selected among 4,506 participants from 134 countries and UNESCO was part of the jury. The first prize winner for the “children” category (up to the age of 14) went to the 11 year old Christ Soselisa, from Indonesia. In the “youth” category (15-25 years old) the first prize was awarded to Parwiz Abrahimi, born in Afghanistan and now living in the USA. In total, honorable mentions were also given to 50 essays (25 in the “children” category and 25 in the “youth” category).

The First prize winners received the Minister of Education Award at a ceremony during the Goi Peace Foundation Forum 2009 held at Ginza Blossom Hall in Tokyo on November 8, 2009. In an act of solidarity, the Youth Category winner, Parwiz Abrahimi, requested that his prize money be donated to the high school in Kabul where he volunteers as science teacher.

The theme chosen for this 2009 edition was directly linked with the global initiatives of the United Nations’ System such as the "United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development" for 2005-2014 and the "International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World" for 2001-2010.

The Goi Peace Foundation is an organization committed to building peace. Through cultural and educational programmes, its objectives are to enhance peace and respect for life and to raise awareness among young people on the role they could play in this area. The Foundation benefits from a special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and maintains an official relationship with UNESCO.
