The Director-General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova, designated the famous Algerian writer, Ahlem Moteghanemi, UNESCO Artist for Peace, during an official ceremony, which took place at UNESCO Headquarters on 16 December 2016.

This title was bestowed upon Ms Mosteghanemi in recognition of her devotion through her writing to promote human causes such as social justice and education for youth affected by conflict, as well as her commitment to the ideals and aims of the Organization.

Being the most widely read woman writer in the Arab world, Ms. Mosteghanemi is the first Arabic-speaking Algerian novelist. Her trilogy (Memories of the flesh, Chaos of the senses, and Passenger of a bed), was sold millions of copies and earned her an enormous popularity such as she is followed by more than 10 million Fans on Facebook. Until now, her books are receiving a great success. One of them, her latest book (The black fit you so well).

After completing a PhD at the French University “Sorbonne” with a thesis on "The image of women in the contemporary Algerian literature", Ms Mosteghanemi moved to Paris with her family and worked for various magazines. At the same time, she began writing her first novel and shifted from poetry to prose. She says about it: "Once we lose a love, we write poems, once we lose a homeland, we write a novel."

For more than 40 years, while enriching the Arabic literature with greatly praised sentimental and poetic works, Ms Mosteghanemi raised awareness against corruption, injustice and in favor of women rights. She is the ambassador of the Algerian Foundation "Forem”’, which supports 13,000 orphans, and is designated personality of the year 2015 by the Foundation "Children of peace in Yemen".

As UNESCO Artist for Peace, Ms. Mosteghanemi will participate in major events organized by the UNESCO Regional Office for Education in Beirut, in the Middle East region or in the Headquarters, in order to speak at the inauguration of an event, in a closing ceremony or to chair a round table. Moreover, she will write articles for important newspapers in order to draw the attention of public opinion to Organization's actions in favor of causes such as social justice and education of youth traumatized by conflicts, and at the same time, her comments on current events will highlight the work of UNESCO.

During her public speeches and appearances, Ms Mostaghanemi commits herself to make use of her expertise and reputation to increase public opinion’s awareness on UNESCO's actions and its values.

Ms. Mostaghanemi is very involved now in increasing aid to Syrian refugees in the Middle East. Thus, she has almost launched a campaign in order to buy and collect clothes to help Syrian refugees to overcome the harsh winter and soon plans to take a trip with the Arab Red Cross to the Refugees camps in Jordan to distribute the collection.
