UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education

Laureates' Seminar

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education and to share lessons learned from the previous prize winning projects, UNESCO organized a Laureates’ Seminar on innovative practices of using ICT in Education. Former Laureates and the two new laureates presented the projects that have won the Prize and contribute to the debate on leveraging ICT to achieve Education 2030 agenda.

The main objectives of the Seminar were to:

  • Gather the former laureates of the UNESCO ICT in Education Prize to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Prize
  • Share knowledge and lessons learned from the innovative projects/initiatives that have won the Prize previously, and to
  • Explore the further cooperation between laureates and UNESCO under the framework of Education 2030 agenda and the Qingdao Declaration concerning how to leverage ICT to achieve Education 2030.

Seminar One: Fostering digital inclusion for inclusive education

  • Mr Thomas Rathgeb, Executive, Internet-ABC Project

Thomas Rathgeb is member of the board of the media literacy initiative “Internet ABC”, supported by the german media authorities. He is based at the media authority of Baden-Württemberg, (Landesanstalt für Kommunikation, LFK) in Stuttgart, Germany in the position of the head of department “media literacy, monitoring, and protection of minors”. Furthermore he is head of the “Media Education research group southwest (mpfs)” that is publishing periodical studies about the media use of children and minors. Thomas Rathgeb holds a degree in social sciences (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg) and was born 1970 in Ellwangen, Germany.

  • Mr Jaeshin Song, KERIS, Republic of Korea

Mr Jaeshin Song is a research fellow at the Global Policy Research Center at Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS). With over 3 decades’ experience as high school teacher, ICT educational specialist and member of the policy advisory committee, Dr. Song has an abundance of experience, especially in the development of Korea’s ICT in education policies, e-portal system EDUNET, Cyber Home Learning System, Digital Textbook, and ICT Teacher Training Program. He has served as an adjunct professor at Korea University. Dr. Song graduated from Choong-nam National University with a BA degree in Electrical Engineering in Education, and also holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Ajou University, Korea.

  • Mr Ramon David Parra Carrero, President, Infocentro Foundation, Venezuela

He was born on December 20th in 1981 in Caracas-Venezuela. Economist from Los Andes University.

Since a very young age he has been involved in the efforts for the democratizacion of ICT use in his country. At a short age he was a member of ANCLA Group, a nonprofit organization aimed to share the use of technologies in poor regions. Then he became part of the Francisco Miranda Group and Director of Mision Sucre Foundation, its main goal has been guarantee a free access to college education.

During his carrer his most remarkable jobs in public institutions have been:  Executive Director of CIDA (Astronomical Research Center), Venezuelan Science Research Institute Adviser, General Manager for Productive Development of the Ministry of Science and Technology and President of Infocentro Foundation.

Seminar Two: Leveraging ICTs to enable lifelong learning

  • Ms Nermine Nabulsi, CEO, Jordan Educational Initiative, Jordan

Ms Nermine Nabulsi is the Chief Executive Officer of Jordan Educational Initiative. She Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public law from the University of Jordan. She began her career as a Legal Practitioner working first in the public sector. In 1987 she moved to the Banking sector, beginning what would become an illustrious 20 year journey, throughout which she managed several different departments across a number of banks, and concluding in 2007 as COO at Capital Bank in Jordan. She then utilized her experience by founding ‘Horizon Banking Consultants’, an ICT, organizational development, and strategic planning services company. In 2013, Nermine chose to apply the wealth of knowledge and experience she had amassed over the years in the development sector, fulfilling a long harbored passion, and serving a noble cause by Joining Jordan Education Initiative as CEO.

  • Mr Robert Greenawalt, Chief Technology Officer, Curriki, United States of America

Mr Robert Greenawalt is the Chief Technology Officer of Curriki. Bob has spent his 20+ year technology career in a wide variety of application development and management positions, including a substantial amount of focused on education. He has also been a faculty member at West Point, where he taught in the Computer Science department, and has held several other computer science adjunct teaching positions. Before holding several consulting roles with Oracle and PriceWaterhouse in New York, he started his career as a telecommunications and information systems officer in the Army. After leading the IT organization of a New York advertising agency, Bob became CTO of LearningExpress, LLC a New York print and online education company, developing educational test preparation materials for the consumer, public library and K-12 markets. He then became CTO and founder of Gorlet Learning Resources, providing online educational resources to the public library market. Most recently, he has been involved as CTO of aZOOMbee, another startup, assisting job seekers in their career searches.

Bob holds a BS from the United States Military Academy, an MS in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Wharton School. He has two children currently making their way through the secondary education system.

Seminar Three: Quality and safety of e-learning

  • Mr Lawrence Wee, Senior Specialist, Ministry of Education, Singapore

Mr Lawrence Wee is a Physics teacher from the Ministry of Education, Singapore. As a Senior Specialist in the Educational Technology Division, he has written 26 research papers and participated in 5 funded projects relating to Open Source Physics. He was awarded the Singapore Public Service PS21 Distinguished Star Service Award in 2014, Singapore Public Service PS21 Best Ideator in 2012.

  • Ms Leda Muñoz, Executive Director, Omar Dengo Foundation, Costa Rica

Ms Leda Muñoz is the Executive Director of the Omar Dengo Foundation (FOD) and full professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Costa Rica.  During her professional career she has concentrated in two main activities: as researcher, trying to understand problems and evaluating solutions to improve the opportunities of development of children and youth in areas such as nutrition, education, health and poverty.  Her second area of experience is the design and implementation of large scales projects in the above mentioned areas.  During the last four years as FOD´s Executive Director, she has being promoting educational interventions that support the development of skills and talents of the younger generations.  The Omar Dengo Foundation´s main program, the National Educational Informatics Program (PRONIE MEP-FOD), is developed in partnership with Costa Rica´s Minister of Education, and currently benefits more than 550 000 students.  This program is in charge of designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating innovated educational models supported by digital technologies, with the objective of promoting the development of 21st century cognitive and social skills, from a social and educational equity perspective.  The program´s goal is to reach 100% of the country´s primary and secondary education students by 2017.

  • Ms Yuhyun Park, CEO, iZ HERO initiative, Republic of Korea

Ms Yuhyun Park is a social entrepreneur and university researcher who founded infollutionZERO, a non-profit organization in Korea that is focused on raising public awareness of infollution (information pollution) such as cyberbullying and technology addiction, providing digital citizenship training for children, and shaping public policy on internet governance and safety. In 2013, she was selected as an Eisenhower Fellow (Multi-National Program) as well as the first Ashoka Fellow representing Korea in recognition of her leadership in the social entrepreneurship sector. She has twice won international  awards from UNESCO, including the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for Use of ICT in Education in 2012 and the Wenhui UNESCO Award for Educational Innovation in 2013, for her development of the iZ HERO program. iZ HERO is an innovative research-based educational program that teaches digital citizenship to children by using interactive digital media and comprehensive school engagement programs. She was also selected as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2015) and was named a member of the Steering Committee of the World Economic Forum’s project Shaping the Future Implications of Digital Media for Society.
