The Project

Education for sustainable development is the driving force behind UNESCO GREEN CITIZENS project. We want to show leaders, farmers, workers and the parents of tomorrow how crucial sustainable development is for the future of our societies and what they can do to solve this problem. By highlighting the stories of people from all around the world through a traveling exhibition, everyone can learn from one another the efforts and opportunities within the field of sustainable development.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (SD)?

Sustainable development seeks to "meet the needs of the present without comprising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," (World Commission of Environment and Development 1987). It promotes the idea that social, environmental, and economic progress can be made without exhausting the earth's natural resources. Sustainable Development is not just about conserving water or saving the rainforest. It is so much more than that!

Education for Sustainable development is about encouraging education about climate change, reducing disaster risks, promoting cultural diversity, gender equality and health, reducing poverty, increasing biodiversity and promoting peace.

OUR STORIES

UNESCO GREEN CITIZENS is highlighting 25 amazing game changers in the area of sustainable development as they share their stories. These stories come from around the world and cover topics from sustainable fishing in France to recycling education in Egypt and promoting local and indigenous knowledge in Nicaragua.

THE EXHIBITION

Through the "UNESCO GREEN CITIZENS: Pathfinders for Change" exhibition, we hope to have the opportunity that these pathfinders have already given to many in their community, the opportunity to teach others new practices and encourage others to work toward sustainable development in their communities. This exhibition will travel from Paris to New York.
