Mexico, which joined UNESCO on November 4, 1946, has hosted a UNESCO National Office since 1967. The principal role of this bureau is to implement initiatives by the E-9 (the group of nine most populous countries in the world) in the promotion of Education For All across the country.

The country participates in EDUCAIDS, a UNESCO-led response to HIV and AIDS. This initiative aims to address the impact of HIV/AIDS, prevent the spread of HIV and support education systems related to HIV/AIDS learning environments. Mexico holds eight UNESCO Chairs and is home to one UNEVOC centre.

As of September 2006, Mexico has 197 schools participating in the UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
