Panama became a UNESCO Member State on January 10, 1950. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office San José, in Costa Rica.

In recognition of “the strategic collaboration with Panama, which has enabled important national programmes and projects to be carried out,” in July 2004 Panama’s Permanent Delegation awarded the Order of Vasco Nuñéz de Balboa to the UNESCO Director-General, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura. This award is the highest distinction that can be given to foreigners by the Panamanian government.

As of September 2006, Panama has 36 schools participating in the UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
