Audio library promotes children’s culture in Arab Region

The UNESCO Office in Ramallah and Birzeit University’s Media Development Center have in cooperation produced Children’s Audio Library, targeting youth between 3 and 14 years of age, to promote reading culture, mutual understanding and dialogue.
The CD-ROM, entitled The Tales across Time, consists of 50 hours of stories of Palestinian, Arab, regional and international children’s and youth literature in the Arabic language. It is a follow up of the first project, implemented in 2006-2007, under which an audio library of classic Arabic literature was produced. The new CD-ROM includes tales by the brothers Grimm, One Thousand and One Nights, Alice in Wonderland and other stories that reflect different times, are written in different styles – old, traditional and modern - and are read and dramatized by actors and by a group of children.
“We are really proud of this project because this CD is unique and first of its kind in Palestine. It promotes children’s culture and reading in a really good way. Our aim is to continue the project and raise the important issue of children’s culture,” Nibal Thawabteh, Director of Media Development Center at Birzeit University, explains.
“This was the first time I participated in this kind of recording. I have been acting before in some radio programmes, but this experience was very exciting and unique,“ one of the actors, 13-year old Mosadaq Kadan, says.
900 CDs will be distributed in the West Bank, Gaza and the Arab region to schools, radio stations, public libraries, cultural organizations, blind persons and youth.
Audio books have become very popular around the world in the recent years, and this project aims to raise the interest in Palestine and the Arab Region for children’s literature and to revive the tradition of storytelling.
