UNESCO’s Office in Rabat launches a logo contest on the theme “Women and media in the Maghreb”. The winning logo will be used on Facebook pages of the project, which aims to improve women’s image and to reduce stereotyping in the Maghreb media. Professional graphic designers, artists, students in communication and arts from Maghreb countries are invited to submit their logos to the UNESCO Rabat Office before 13 February 2011.
UNESCO supports initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality in its field of competences. Last year the UNESCO office in Rabat has launched a four-year project entitled “Women and media in the Maghreb”, with the goal to improve women’s image in the media content, to reduce stereotyping and to spread gender-sensitive culture in the Maghreb countries.

The project proposes a coherent overall strategic action that capitalizes on media as a powerful tool for transformation of societal practices. It provides a framework for cooperation until 2013 in three key areas:

  • capacity-building of media practitioners;
  • introduction of a gender approach in journalism education;
  • advocacy among policy and decision makers in media and governments, with a view to creating a professional code of ethics to sustain gender-mainstreaming in media content.

  • The Women and media in the Maghreb project is implemented by UNESCO’s Office in Rabat in partnership with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the German corporation GTZ. The best logo will be selected by a jury composed of representatives from these organizations. The winner will receive a grant of US$ 1,000 and will be announced on Facebook on 8 March 2011.

    Logo specifications

    The logo should symbolize and represent gender equality, media and Maghreb. It can be abstract or figurative. The design should be simple and easy to duplicate. The maximum number of colours is three, plus a black and white version.

    Submitted proposals should be in digital format, of minimum resolution 600 dpi and should comprise a vector file and a .jpg file. Proposals should be accompanied by a technical description, including: logo colours (according to international standards), software used and any other relevant details, necessary for the reproduction of the logo (size, resolution, etc.).

    The proposals should to be sent, before 13 February 2011, to the following email address: b.eguiluz@unesco.org.
