Teaching information ethics in Africa
An academic workshop on information ethics took place on 4 and 5 July 2011 at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. A number of delegates from universities in Africa, Europe and the United States of America gathered to discuss the principles related to the development of a curriculum for teaching information ethics in Africa.
Director-General condemns murder of Honduran broadcast journalists Nery Jeremías Orellana and Adan Benítez
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today condemned the murder, in separate incidents, of two Honduran broadcast journalists: Nery Jeremías Orellana, shot down on 14 July, and TV reporter Adan Benítez who was killed on 4 July. The Director-General also called for a thorough investigation into these killings.
Director-General condemns killing of Mexican journalist Angel Castillo Corona
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, condemned the killing of Angel Castillo Corona, a columnist for two regional newspapers and press officer of the municipality of Ocuilan.
University Network on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue launched by UNESCO and UNAOC
UNESCO and the United Nation Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), with a deep commitment to promote media and information literate societies on a global scale, have launched the first international University Network on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (UNESCO/UNAOC-MILID).
Improving social impact of community centres through better access to information in Namibia
A meeting for the development and adoption of an inclusive information society action plan will be organized in Tsumeb (Oshikoto, Namibia) from 26 to 27 July 2011. This meeting is a follow-up to the survey on access to information and diversification of content among different community centres present in the Oshikoto region, which took place last April. The Oshikoto region had been chosen for the survey after a consultation with the Namibian Ministry of Education and Ministry of Information and Communication Technology.
UNESCO hosts workshops at Doha global science journalism conference
The Qatari capital Doha was a hive of activity during the 7th World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ 2011), held from 27 to 29 June 2011. Hosted by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, the Conference provided an opportunity for UNESCO to hold two pre-Conference workshops focusing on science journalism education curricula as well as on reporting climate change and biodiversity.
Broadcasting regulation workshop is taking place this week in Lesotho
A five-day training workshop started yesterday in Maseru, Lesotho, to promote existing legal and regulatory frameworks covering broadcasting regulation during election periods, as well as election coverage by broadcasters. This workshop for journalists and the Lesotho Communications Authority is taking place from 18 to 22 July 2011.
Latin American Consultative Meeting on UNESCO’s Model Curricula for Journalism Education to be held in Ecuador
UNESCO’s Office in Quito and the Ecuadorian Private Technical University of Loja (UTPL) will organize the Latin American Consultative Meeting on UNESCO’s Model Curricula for Journalism Education in Loja, Ecuador, from 19 to 20 July 2011.
