    UNESCO’s Bangkok Office starts new ICT in education project funded by Korean government
    ‘Facilitating Effective ICT-Pedagogy Integration’ is a three-year project, supported by the Korean-Funds-In-Trust (KFIT) to promote better collaboration between teacher-education institutions and the network of primary and secondary schools. Through this project, pre-service teachers can get a taste of the school environment, while those who are already in service can update their knowledge with new teaching practices using ICT.

    UNESCO laid the foundations for an International Coordination Committee (ICC) for Haitian culture at a meeting on 16 February in Paris, opened by Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO. The meeting was chaired by Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassègue, Haiti’s Minister of Culture and Communication, and Françoise Rivière, the Organization’s Assistant Director-General for Culture.

    Training on e-government to take place in Angola next month
    UNESCO’s Windhoek and Brasilia Offices, in partnership with the Angolan National Commission for UNESCO, will hold a two-day training workshop for 20 local participants on the UNESCO E-Government Toolkit for Developing Countries, in Luanda, Angola, on 10 and 11 March 2010.

    Last January the Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC) held a series of workshops on public broadcasting, funded by UNESCO. Conducted in the Maldivian capital, Malé, the workshops gathered together top executives and the Chairman of MNBC, parliamentarians, government ministers and representatives of NGO’s and of commercial broadcasting.

    A national conference will take place on 10 February 2010 to discuss and finalize a report assessing the level of media development in Mozambique. The report, prepared by MISA-Mozambique in collaboration with UNESCO, provides a comprehensive analysis of the country’s media sector based on UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators (MDIs).

    To apply Internet-related technologies to social development, UN, UNESCO, CEB Secretariat, UNFPA and UNCTAD are hosting the sixth annual edition of the Web for Development (Web4Dev) Conference. The event will take place on 25 and 26 February 2010 in the Grand Bittar Hotel in Brasília, Brazil. The Conference is also supported by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br) and the Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br).

    UNESCO-supported Boundless Project promotes diversity and cross-border journalism
    Promoting cultural diversity and cross-border journalism is a key objective of the Boundless Project, which provides multimedia and television professionals with the opportunity to participate in the Young Euro-Mediterranean Academy for Intercultural Journalism. 12 young journalists took part in the training hosted by Deutsche Welle in Bonn, Germany, from 30 November to 11 December 2009.

    When UNESCO’s Bangkok Office announced the release of its E-Learning Series on Information and Communication Technology in Education in June 2009, it was beyond expectation that 3,000 CD-ROMs would run out in just a few months. Requests for copies came literally from everywhere. To satisfy users’ demand, the Bangkok Office makes now its CD available online.

    UNESCO trains Maghreb public service broadcasters to reduce gender stereotyping
    UNESCO’s Rabat Office initiates a series of training-the-trainers workshops for media practitioners in Maghreb countries to produce gender-sensitive media content and to reduce stereotyping. The first training targeting public TV professionals will take place in Rabat from 2 to 4 February 2010.

    200 participants attend workshops on media development indicators in Ecuador
    About 200 people attended the Workshops on the Application of Media Development Indicators (MDIs) organized by UNESCO’s Quito Office, in collaboration with CIESPAL and the Universo Foundation. The seminars, which took place on 12 January in Quito and on 14 January in Guayaquil, aimed at collecting inputs on the methodology of implementation of MDIs.

    “Newsroom-Based Mechanism and Self-Regulation Attempts in Albania” was the theme of the national roundtable organized in Tirana last month by UNESCO, in cooperation with the Albanian Media Institute and OSCE. The roundtable was attended by 40 participants, including editors, journalists, university lecturers, media experts and representatives of journalists’ associations.
