As long as criminalization of homosexuality and stigma, discrimination and violence against LGBT individuals continues in the Caribbean, the emotional and physical health of LGBT young people is at risk. All young people have the right to be treated equally under the law and to live free of discrimination and harassment. Organizations, governments, and individuals must work toward full acceptance and recognition of LGBT people, including young people.
The goal of the Caribbean Cooperation in Health is to improve health and wellbeing, develop the productive potential of the people, and the competitive advantage of the region. This framework is a response to the commitments made by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government in regional and international declarations and policy guidelines. This report is primarily for practitioners working on developing HIV prevention and awareness campaigns and messages for teens and young people. It summarizes theáfindings of a study conducted in three Eastern Caribbean countries on the responses of teens to HIV campaigns and messages in their countries.
The overall objectives of this rapid survey undertaken by EduCan in early 2008 are to inform the development of both regional and national level education sector policies and strategies on school health, nutrition and HIV in the Caribbean region. The survey also aims to describe the current situation of education sector response to school health, nutrition, HIV and stigma, and to provide a baseline for monitoring progress. It also aims to provide data on the allocation and mobilization of resources used in such education sector responses across the region.
The HIV epidemic is driven by a number of factors including cultural, behavioural and socio-economic. A strategic plan is a necessary tool to guide all stakeholders and create a synergistic approach instead of duplicated efforts.
