Objective: University-based peer health education is a recent development in China. The authors evaluated a newly implemented program in the Guangdong province. Participants and Methods: In September 2006, the authors conducted a crosssectional study using self-administered questionnaires on 30 peer educators and 247 students. Results: All peer educators and the majority of student respondents positively evaluated the program. Although students preferred to seek health information online, approximately one-quarter of the student respondents would contact peer educators. …
Background: The need to develop capacity for health services and systems research (HSSR) in low and middle income countries has been highlighted in a number of international forums. However, little is known about the level of HSSR training in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We conducted an assessment at four major East and Southern African universities to describe: a) the numbers of HSSR PhD trainees at these institutions, b) existing HSSR curricula and mode of delivery, and c) motivating and challenging factors for PhD training, from the trainees’ experience. …
Background: People who identity as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) have specific health needs. Sexual orientation and gender identity are social determinants of health, as homophobia and heteronormativity persist as prejudices in society. LGBT patients often experience discrimination and prejudice in health care settings. While recent South African policies recognise the need for providing LGBT specific health care, no curricula for teaching about LGBT health related issues exist in South African health sciences faculties. …
The National Teacher Preparation Standards for Sexuality Education were created to provide guidance to programs within institutions of higher education in order to better prepare undergraduate pre-service students to deliver sexuality education. This study, commissioned by the Association of African Universities, was conducted to identify the strengths, constraints and opportunities for addressing the human resource and policy challenges occassioned by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. A sample of between 12 and 15 institutions which exemplified best practices in the response to HIV and AIDS in Africa was identified. This paper will provide an overview of the HIV/AIDS situation globally and in Africa. It will then provide the present status of HIV/AIDS in higher education institutions and schools in Africa, including examples of good practice with respect to teaching, research and community service, and present barriers and challenges.
