The Skool's Out initiative was aimed at encouraging effective responses to homophobic harassment and violence in and around schools, both public and private, in New South Wales, Australia. The focus was on safety and security in the school environment for all students, teachers, parents and community members. It was held as part of the 2002 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and comprised three events: a public Forum, an entry in the Parade and a stall for the Mardi Gras Fair Day. Action Plan on Bullying, launched by the Minister for Education and Skills, and the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, sets out twelve actions to help prevent and tackle bullying in primary and second level schools. There is inadequate information on the burden of HIV infection, and on the prevalence of the risk factors for HIV transmission among University students in Uganda. Routine sources of data such as HIV surveillance and national population-based AIDS Indicator surveys do not provide information on institutional populations such as University students. Moreover, these sub-populations require interventions to address the risk factors that expose them to HIV infection in their unique settings. …

This document contains a situational analysis of higher education institutions (HEI) in South Africa to determine the state of HIV and AIDS workplace programmes. It concludes that no HEI currently has a comprehensive workplace HIV and AIDS programme although all have some elements in place. The content and reach of HIV and AIDS services for staff varies greatly across institutions. On the one hand, a few institutions have many elements of workplace HIV and AIDS programmes in place whilst at the other end of the scale, several HEIs have almost no functioning programme for employees. …

Lessons learnt from Phase 1 and the result of a survey on best practices in HIV and AIDS management in African higher education institutions initiated by the AAU in 2007 have led to the development of the AAU HIV and AIDS 5-year Strategic Framework, to be implemented as Phase 2 of the AAU HIV/AIDS Core Programme. Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW) Zambia recently began the third year of its School HIV/AIDS Education Program (SHEP) in conjunction with Zambia's Ministry of Education (MOE). SHEP is implemented by volunteer peer educators selected from a pool of applicants who have completed at least a secondary education and who may have completed tertiary level education. Thus, they are closer in age to students than most teachers, although they are not exactly same-age peers. After an intensive training, volunteer peer educators are placed in same-sex pairs at one of the SPW schools. …

South African higher education celebrated a decade of democracy in 2004. As the country's institutions and its citizens celebrate this freedom, it is time to reflect on the enormous challenges which confront South African society and the role which higher education is expected to play. Just over four years ago, institutional leaders in government and in the higher education community committed themselves to supporting and implementing a programme aimed at putting in place a comprehensive response to HIV and AIDS across the higher education system. …
