Description

This is an eastern desert lake. It is of three zones: Hamoun- Hirmand in south and south western part, Hamoun-e- Sabereen in northwestern part and Hamoun-e-Pouzak in northeastern of Sistan Plain. In seasons qf high precipitation the area of lake is about 5700 km2. 3800 km2 of its area is within Iranian territory and the rest is located in Afghanistan.

Justification of Outstanding Universal Value

VII. Each of the lake parts and the rivers in between, in all seasons with high or low precipitation the complex is of great value.

VIII. It contains most of natural elements and links.

IX. The area is extended and contains all essential and key elements are necessary in choosing proper ways of preserving the nature in long term periods.

X. The area is of great flora and fauna, measure and peregrine birds variety.

Statements of authenticity and/or integrity

Enjoying great habitats, the lake has a good variety offlora and fauna. A considerable number ofperegrine birds migrate here from distant places.

  • This is the first country pond registered in international convention of Ramsar.
  • It was a residence since 4000 B. C.
  • Nomads have been lived here for long time.
  • The place enjoys a great variety of scenic beauty.

Comparison with other similar properties

Enjoying great variety of environmental features as well as flora and fauna it's a great inhabitat for all creatures and especially peregrine birds and due to these it has been registered as the first Iranian pond.
