UNESCO to participate at the at the 4th Africa Conference on Sexual Health and Rights

UNESCO will highlight its work on sexuality education at the 4th Africa Conference on Sexual Health and Rights to be held in Addis Ababa, from 9-12 February 2010. The Conference is the first of many regional events where UNESCO will launch the recently published International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education.

On 10 February 2010, UNESCO in partnership with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) will sponsor a panel session entitled “Demystifying young people’s sexuality: growing up and sexual maturation in the context of HIV and AIDS in Africa”.

The panel is composed of renowned African scientists from Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Togo and will also include representatives from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health from the United Republic of Tanzania. A young professional from the Africa Population and Health Research Centre in Nairobi will provide the closing comments for the session.

UNESCO will also participate in a panel presentation sponsored by the Partnership on Child Development on the topic of HIV Positive Teachers.

On 11 February 2010, UNESCO and WHO will host a skills-building workshop entitled “Using the International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education to develop country-specific action plans for education and health authorities”. The aim of the workshop is to equip government officials with knowledge and skills to implement sexuality education programmes.
