Countrywide workshops in Pakistan - participatory policy making for the creative sector & UNESCO's 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions

The countrywide workshops between 17 and 24 November will bring together government representatives, creative professionals, academics, as well as representatives from civil society organizations to discuss the growing importance of the creative economy in Pakistan. It will be a platform to listen to creative entrepreneurs about their challenges, needs and aspirations in order to elaborate public policies to meet the needs of the stakeholders. This 3rd phase of an ongoing process, will also highlight the importance of evidence-based, transparent policymaking involving key players from the creative sector and collaboration across different ministries at different levels of governments. Islamabad - 15 November 2016: UNESCO Islamabad together with Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) jointly organized an event on the occasion of World Science Day 2016 at the Pakistan Museum of Natural History in Islamabad. The theme
for this years' was "Celebrating Science Centers and Science Museums". The event aimed to create awareness on the importance of WSD and to encourage students towards scientific education and research and to provide them with a platform to share ideas between the scientists and students. Water, Energy and Food Security, key for achieving SDGs in Dryland Regions

Rawalpindi 23-25 November 2016: A three-day International Conference "Asia Pacific Policy Dialogue on Water, Energy and Food Security for Poverty Alleviation in Dryland Regions" was jointly organized by UNESCO and Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR). The conference was held at a time when the United Nations together with its partners is promoting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Conference was constituted to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into national development plans and proposed policy guidelines and strategies for effective use of resources to ensure water, energy and food security. Orange Day in Islamabad

24 November 2016: The UNITE to End Violence against Women campaign, an initiative of the UN Secretary General, is celebrated on the 25th of each and every month. Orange Day, as it is called, is a day of awareness raising and of action to end violence against women and girls. UNESCO Islamabad joined other field offices and colleagues in the UN to celebrate Orange Day. Dressed in their bright orange attires, and in their own style, UNESCO staff came out to partake in the events and to show their solidarity with the campaign.

Gender equality and women empowerment are two key priorities of the newly adopted SDGs. Goal 16, for example, is dedicated to the promotion of just, peaceful and inclusive societies. You will recall that one of the global priorities of UNESCO is gender equality; the empowerment of women and girls, is therefore well established in our programme and mandate.
Rather than a photo opportunity, Orange Day is therefore a significant event and milestone to check on our own progress and to reflect on our results and lessons learned.

International Day for Tolerance 16th November 2016: Cherishing Diversity

When Pakistan was created, Muhammad Ali Jinnah envisioned a state that would be a home to all people, irrespective of their race, religion, or cast. He said, "You may belong to any religion, caste or creed - that has nothing to do with the business of the state". When the UN was created, among the first words in the charter were that, people of the UN were "to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours". Mr. Jinnah and the founders of the UN recognized that a tolerant society is an important pre-condition for human development in a society. Since the 1940's both in Pakistan, and the world, tolerance of others has grown - but sadly progress has been inconsistent whether in terms of attacks on cultural heritage, such as at Bamian, in Afghanistan, or on religious tolerance as shown most recently and horribly in the 14 November attack on hundreds at the Shah Noorani Shrine. UNESCO Pakistan launches the 2016 Global Education Monitoring Report

UNESCO Pakistan in collaboration with UNICEF and other UN partners in Islamabad unveiled the 2016 GEM Report, entitled "Education for People and Planet: Creating Sustainable Future for All". The national launching ceremony is followed by the global launch on 6 September 2016 at UNESCO HQ in Paris.

The 2016 GEM Report was formally presented by UNESCO Representative to Pakistan, Ms. Vibeke Jensen to Mr. Baligh-ur-Rehman, Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training. Ms. Angela Kearney, UNICEF Representative to Pakistan and Ms. Razina Alam Khan, Chairperson, National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) were also present at the presentation ceremony. A large audience including officials of the government of Pakistan and representatives from government, development partners, civil society, academia and media also attended the launching ceremony. Kalash Photo Exhibition

Islamabad, 27 September 2016: UNESCO Pakistan and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in collaboration with Satrang Art Gallery, Serena Hotel Islamabad, launched a selection of ethnographic photos of the Kalash community.
The exhibition titled, "Faces of the Kalash" showcased a number of photos from 1929 Georg Morgenstierne's field-work who was a Norwegian linguistic professor at that time and extensively documented the culture of the Kalash. Sustainable Development Goal-4

UNESCO, UNICEF, Federal Ministry of Education and Professional Training, Provincial Ministries of Education launched successful consultations.

Four consultations were held in four cities in Pakistan (Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar) within the framework of the global SDG-4 and its targets which aim at ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. The workshops were drawn upon the Framework For Action (FFA) Education 2030 adopted in November 2015 by UNESCO Member States that aims at supporting all countries to realize their own vision and ambitions for education.
