Back to topAdvisory Committee meets to review proposals for new Biosphere Reserves
The International Advisory Committee for Biosphere Reserves is the primary scientific and technical body advising UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme (MAB) and its World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The Committee, comprising 12 international experts, met on 23-26 January 2017 at UNESCO Headquarters to review the functioning of the network and formulate recommendations.
The Committee reviewed 18 proposals for new Biosphere Reserves, as well as 12 extension proposals and 89 periodic reviews of existing designated sites. The Committee also formulated technical advice on ongoing work in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves in accordance with the Seville Strategy, the Statutory Framework for the network and the Madrid Action Plan.
The Committee’s recommendations will serve to inform the decisions of the International Co-ordinating Council of the MAB programme, which will meet at UNESCO Headquarters, in Paris, France in June 2017.
