Exhibition | "Janis Rôzentals, art and technique"

Exhibition of reproductions of works by the Latvian painter Janis Rôzentals, as well as archival documents, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth (1866-1916).
Janis Rozentāls was a tireless searcher. He made a major contribution in the development of Latvian portrait, landscape and genre painting, monumental and religious art, graphics, applied art, as well as art theory and criticism. Through his diverse activities, the artist introduced new principles that were in tune with the tendencies of the age and the Latvian national revival. Accordingly, he represents one of the founding figures of professional Latvian art from the close of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
J. Rozentāls was also very active in forming the society of artists from Baltic provinces. As a member and one of the leaders of Baltic Artists’ Society he contributed to the development and modernization of Baltic art, as well as helped in improving the circulation of the works of artists joined under Baltic Artists' Society. The activity of the organisation streamlined another welcomed phenomena, namely more and more fellow-citizens of other ethnicities got engaged in development of Latvian culture as contributors, not observers. Moreover, the movement of modernization of arts in Baltics that J. Rozentāls was a part of, marks tendency that was similar in Scandinavian counties, namely that modernization of art was applied through national revival. For this reason, commemoration of J. Rozentāls action and works narrates and promotes the shared values and history of the region concerned.
