2nd ODS Winter School to take off in Lithuania this January

Nature of Inquiry in Inquiry of Nature. Under this motto, the summer school organized by UAB Metis Baltic and Ellinogermaniki Agogi will take place from 28 January up to 1 February 2013 in Vilnius. The course takes place in the context of the project “Development of LD-skills: Development of learning design skills for enhancing students' key competencies”, with the aim to have a positive impact on the development of students’ problem-solving competencies by promoting the use of inquiry and problem-based approaches to teaching and thereby immersing participating teachers in the process of science-enquiry via their interaction with a unique collection of open digital educational resources, linked with the science curricula.
The winter school is organized in the framework of the COMENIUS-GRUNDTVIG In-Service Training Programme LD-Skills and is supported by the NATURAL EUROPE and OPEN DISCOVERY SPACE projects.
The resources to be used have proven their efficiency and efficacy in promoting inquiry based-education. These resources do not impose a fixed curriculum but support the development of a model that can be customised to reflect location and culture as well as cross-disciplinary situations where the curricular areas that might be applicable are not within a single subject area of science, mathematics and thus are ideal to be used in the European context.
Participants will develop their learning-design skills by creating learning activities into a workflow and a vehicle for the sharing and re-use of learning design patterns in schools. In addition, teachers will be trained to select appropriate learning-design ICT tools that suit their own needs in terms of planning, implementing and sharing pedagogical ideas. This will further empower them to create effective inquiry-based learning scenarios to use in their classrooms with their students as well as in multiple environments such as face-to-face, online and other technology mediated learning. Such an approach enabling all stakeholders (teachers pre-service and in-service, teachers’ trainers, curriculum developers) to examine their own practices in the light of the best performing approaches.
The UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy), is associated with the Open Discovery Space (ODS) project, funded by the European Commission under the CIP ICT-PSP call 5, and kicked off in Athens in April 2012, resulting of the collaboration between 51 organizations from 23 countries, with the aim to create a socially-powered, multilingual open learning infrastructure to boost the adaptation of eLearning Resources in Europe.
