The Tubman Institute will host the annual conference of the Canadian Association of African Studies (CAAS). The conference will take place in Founders College, Winters College and Vanier College  at York University from May 5 to 7, 2011.

This year’s conference will be opened by Dr. Mamdouh Shoukri, President and Vice-Chancellor of York University and is also supported by the UNESCO Slave Route project.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Africa Here, Africa There” and it will feature three prominent scholars from Africa and Canada: Khalid Mustafa Medani, McGill University; Imed Melliti, from the Institut Supérieur des Sciences Humaines, University of Tunis el-Manar ; and Donald Simpson from Innovation Expedition, who will provide a Canadian perspective on “Africa – Here and There in the Sixties”.

This conference also contributes to the objectives of this 2011 International Year for People of African Descent.
