“Traditional medicine and pharmacy in medieval manuscripts” is the theme of a three day conference that opened yesterday in Baku, Azerbaijan after the inclusion of medicine manuscripts of Azerbaijan in the UNESCO’s “Memory of the World Register” in 2005.
The unique collection of medical manuscripts of the Institute of Manuscript of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (IMANAS) includes the works “Zahirei –Nizamshahi” (13th century) by Rustam Jurjiani, “Al ganun fit-tibb” by Abu Ali Ibn Sina (12th century) and “Al Magalat as-Salasun” by Abdulgasim Zahravi (11th century).

The collection “demonstrates the role of Azerbaijan in the development of the world medicine,” said UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura in a message to the Conference participants.

The maintenance of ancient manuscripts and their transmission to future generations is the duty of all, stated Mehriban Aliyeva, the President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO’s Good Will Ambassador, at the opening ceremony ofteh conference, which is organized jointly by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Washington Academy of Sciences with the support of UNESCO.

The scientific programme of the conference that will end on 14 June covers the discussion of medieval medicine manuscripts, ancient and medieval pharmacy, medicine in classic literature and art, folk medicine and other subjects.

UNESC0'sMemory of the World Programme was established as a global framework for the protection and promotion of the documentary heritage, in any form, by raising awareness of the problems associated with its preservation and enabling access to content. The Register, which lends visibility and focus to memory preservation, currently lists 120 items from 57 countries judged to be of world significance.
