LegislationThe National Commission was created as an advisory body of the Government by a decision of the latter, which dates back to 1992. This decision was modified in June 1998 and July 2000.
The Statutes of the Commission was adopted by the Croatian Government. (July 2001)
Documentation CentreThe Documentation Centre of the Commission mainly holds UNESCO publications and other National Commissions' bulletins.
Structure of the CommissionThe National Commission consists of the following bodies:
- The General Assembly
- The Executive Committee
- Five Programme Committees dealing with: (1) Education; (2) Natural Sciences; (3) Social and Human Sciences; (4) Culture; and (5) Communication.
- The Secretariat.
Members/CompositionThe National Commission is composed of 17 members representing various governmental departments and ministries, institutions, agencies and individual experts.
Executive CommitteeComposed of 7 members: the Chairperson, the Vice-Chairperson, and Chairpersons
of the five Programme Committees. The Committee meets three to four times a year.
General AssemblyComposed of 17 members representing the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction; the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports; the Ministry of Culture; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration; the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences; and the Parliament. The General Assembly meets five to six times a year.

Interaction with UNESCO and National Commissions
OverviewThe National Commission collaborates with its counterparts from Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Sweden, Portugal, Denmark, Switzerland, USA, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Republic of Korea, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kenya and Jamaica. It also maintains close working relations with the UNESCO Office in Venice - BRESCE.
